Texas leads in workplace injuries among Hispanics

On Behalf of | Jun 3, 2022 | Work injuries |

Most businesses in the United States have environments that may (and do) lead to workplace injuries sometimes. Workers are always vulnerable although some industries and some work environments are more susceptible to workplace injuries than other environments. Sadly, Texas is in the lead when it comes to people getting injured at work.

According to statistics, Texas is the number one state when it comes to workplace accidents, which result in injuries and fatalities among Hispanic workers. In 2021, it was reported that 221 Latino workers passed away from injuries that they sustained in the workplace.

A longstanding record

According to reports, Texas has been Number 1 in workplace fatalities for 13 of the last 20 years. In fact, from 2010 to 2019, 5,179 Latino workers were killed on the job. That number is higher than in any other state. Of those workplace fatalities in the construction industry, 2/3 were Hispanic.

As a result of such alarming statistics, the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) has partnered with Texas Mutual Insurance Company to create a safety campaign for the entire year of 2022. Those two associations feel that education will help a great deal to decrease the number of injuries and fatalities in the workplace and they feel that something must be done immediately so that they bring about a positive change.

Other ethnic groups and workplace injuries and fatalities

According to reports, workers in other ethnic groups have shown a decrease in the number of workplace injuries and fatalities. On the other hand, the number of injuries and fatalities on the job for Hispanic workers has shown a steady increase over time. The industries that are most affected by this are construction, landscaping, farming, warehousing, and meat processing.

Although the numbers seem to keep increasing, people believed that not enough was being done to change the situation and that many of the workplace accidents could have been prevented. TAMACC has committed to finding some answers as to why there is an upward trend with Latinos in particular.
